Background

The Rosedale Diet was created and developed by Dr. Ron Rosedale. Dr. Rosedale is a renowned expert in nutrition and metabolic medicine and anti-aging specialist. He is also the founder of the Rosedale Center in Denver and the Carolina Center of Metabolic Medicine in North Carolina and the co-founder of the Colorado Center of Metabolic Medicine in Boulder.

In his book-based meal plan, Dr. Rosedale presents a diet plan that is designed to control the hormone leptin. Leptin is believed to be a key hormone responsible for regulating appetite and hunger control. This hormone links with other components in the brain to let the body know that hunger is sated. A small number of people have a rare gene mutation controlling leptin production. This imbalance cause overeating since the body stores more fat. The book suggests that if leptin levels are regulated, weight can be controlled.

The Rosedale Diet basically contains a high amount of good fats and low amounts of carbohydrates, saturated and trans-fats and low protein. This can balance leptin levels and eventually reduce hunger pangs. Moreover, the diet plan is believed to aid in preventing or eliminating heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and conditions of aging.

The first part of the book deals with the principles and the concept of leptin and its association with weight gain. The second part identifies certain types of fat and principles of a healthy diet. The final part of the book discusses the issues of protein, the daily amount needed and the protein recommendations. Diet recipes and product information are also included, as well as laboratories where people can get their leptin levels tested. The plan also recommends the intake of supplements such as such as glutamine, pregnenolone and phosphatidylserine which promises that users will leave the table filled and satisfied. Food and Recipes

The Rosedale Diet plan is easy to follow. The plan emphasizes avoiding starchy carbohydrates and sugars, eating good and unsaturated fats, eating a right amount of protein, eating slowly and avoiding food three hours before bedtime, and eating only when hunger is felt. The menus also include a wide range of foods, creating a well-balanced and diverse meal. The diet plan is started with a 3-week phase where dieters follow the prescribed menus, which consists of a daily food plan. They are advised to choose from foods on the ‘A’ list, which specifies the ‘healthy-fat’ foods such as avocados, olives, nuts, crab, goat cheese and others. Foods on the ‘B’ list include foods that are to be eaten in limited quantities which include steak, lamb chops, fruits and beans. The ‘C’ list contains foods that should be avoided such as those high in trans-fatty acids and saturated fats.

Exercise

The Rosedale Diet plan recommends a daily 15-20 minute exercise regimen starting on the first day of the diet. This can include mild exercises such as brisk walking or climbing stairs. The plan also encourages the addition of certain types of resistance and or weight training to balance the exercise plan and work on large muscle groups.

Expense

The book is available on paperback cover for $14.95 and on hardcover for $23.95. Cost of the supplements available at Rosedale Metabolics may vary. Prices range from $35-$260.

Conclusion

The Rosedale Diet plan may be ideal for people who want to have a healthier lifestyle. Similar to the Atkins and South Beach Diet, it is generally a high fat, lo-carb and low protein plan. To some, it offers nothing new. And although many criticize the diet plan for seemingly lacking in proof and result, there are those who tried the diet plan and have had successful results.
